How To Choose
Two racks. The decision is whether you need the tool box.
Open, chain-and-tray β 160 lbs. Two hangers hold 28 chains, and a full-width dunnage tray runs the length of the rack. Lighter, and nothing to lock.
Diamond plate with Mini-Vault β 220 lbs. A lockable box with three interior shelves, and 24 chains instead of 28. Sixty pounds more, and your binders are out of the weather and out of sight.
Both are 68 x 80 aluminum, both fit sleeper and day cab, and both need 22" of catwalk clearance. Aluminum is the reason to buy either one: it does not rust the way bare steel does under road salt, and the weight you save is weight you can haul.
Neither one welds on. Both mount with a U-bolt kit sized to your frame rail β 19-5/8" for most trucks, 22" extended for a reinforced rail.
Headache racks are not front-end protection devices and do not meet FMCSA/DOT CFR 393.114a. Secure every load per CFR 393.100-393.132 regardless of what sits behind the cab. Install on trucks only, not on trailers.
