About This Product

A coil rack, also called a coil chock or coil bunk, is what holds a steel coil in position so it cannot roll across the deck. This is the heavy version: 40" of welded steel carrying six chocks in three opposing pairs, which give three cradle widths — 17", 25 1/2" and 35". One rack covers a range of coil sizes instead of a single one.

The chocks do not touch the coil. They hold the timbers. You lay a wood beam into the pair of chocks that matches the coil you are hauling, and the angled faces seat it leaning rather than flat, so the beam stays put while you set the load. The coil then rests on the timbers, and the spacing you chose is what decides how the coil sits.

Run a rubber friction pad under the rack. That is what stops the whole assembly creeping on the deck under braking, and on a palletized coil FMCSA requires the pad between pallet and deck anyway. Then chain across the top of the coil. The rack positions the load; it does not restrain it against road forces on its own.

At 14.1 lbs it is roughly three times the weight of our 33" half-saddle rack, on a wider base plate. Figure roughly one rack per 10,000 lbs of coil, set at both ends.

Key Features

Three Cradle Widths — 17", 25 1/2", 35"
Six chocks in three opposing pairs. Set the timbers to the coil you are hauling instead of buying a rack per size.
The Chocks Hold the Timbers
Angled faces seat the beam leaning rather than flat, so it stays put while you set the load. The coil rests on the wood.
40" Welded Steel Base
14.1 lbs on a 4" wide plate, roughly three times the weight of our 33" half-saddle rack.
Runs on a Friction Pad
A rubber pad under the rack is what stops the assembly creeping on the deck under braking.

Best For

Load class
Steel coils across a range of widths, where one rack has to cover more than a single coil size.
Coverage
Roughly one rack per 10,000 lbs of coil, set at both ends of the load.
Needs with it
Wood beams to seat in the chocks and a rubber friction pad underneath. Neither is optional.
Safety Tip

A coil rack positions the coil. It does not restrain it. Set racks at both ends of the coil, run a rubber friction pad underneath, and add chain across the top before the trailer moves. On a palletized coil, FMCSA requires a friction mat between pallet and deck.

“Got 2 4ft tarps and 2 8ft tarps for my husband’s birthday since he drives a flatbed. It’s been a while now, and he’s been using them non-stop—says they’re the best tarps he’s ever had. They seriously withstand everything! Super tough and still look like new.”
